Privacy

Fan Pilot collects nothing.

No account, no analytics, no crash reporting, no telemetry of any kind. Nothing about you or your Mac is gathered, stored on a server, or sent anywhere.

Why there is nothing to send

Fan Pilot has no network code. It never opens a connection, checks for updates in the background, or phones home. Fan speeds and temperatures are read from your Mac's own sensors and shown only on your Mac.

What it writes, and where

Everything Fan Pilot keeps stays on your own disk:

  • Settings. The current preset, your Balanced, Max and Smart values, and menu bar or notch mode, in the app's preferences (ru.fanyagin.fanpilot), as any Mac app keeps them.
  • The helper. Setting fan speeds needs root, so the first manual preset installs a small helper, ru.fanyagin.fanpilot.helper, in /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools with its launch file in /Library/LaunchDaemons. It talks only to Fan Pilot on the same Mac, only sets fan speeds, and stores nothing.

No logs, readings or history are written anywhere. The uninstall commands remove the helper and the settings, and leave nothing behind.

The App Store

If you get Fan Pilot from the Mac App Store, Apple handles the purchase and the download under Apple's privacy policy. Apple shows me anonymous, aggregate sales and usage reports — how many copies sold in a country, for instance. Those reports say nothing about any individual, and I never see who you are.

If you write to me

The Send a message button on the contact page opens a form asking for a name, an email address and a message. Nothing is stored on this site: the message is handed straight to an email service, Postwing, which delivers it to my mailbox. Your IP address is counted in memory for ten minutes so the form cannot be used to send bulk mail; it is never written to disk and nothing about the request is logged.

I use your message and your email address to answer you and for nothing else — no list, no marketing, never passed on. Ask me to delete the correspondence and I will.

Changes

If a future version of Fan Pilot ever needs the network, this page will say so before that version ships, and the app will ask first.
